Cervical Smears

It is current Health Authority policy to offer a routine three yearly cervical smear to women between the ages of 25 and 49 years and a five yearly check from the ages of 50 to 64 years. Cervical smear appointments are available with the Practice Nurse. The Health Authority will inform you of the test result by post, which can take up to three months. The Health Authority also run the recall system and send out reminder letters to women whose test is due.

Family Planning

We provide a friendly confidential service for all contraception needs.

Emergency (also known as morning after) contraception is available and can be supplied after consulting with any of the doctors, nurses or nurse practitioners. It can take up to 72 hours after unprotected sex but the sooner the emergency contraception pills are taken the more effective they are. Please let reception know you need an urgent consultation for emergency contraception, and it will be arranged after either a face to face or telephone consultation with a member of the medical or nursing team.

Antenatal & Postnatal Clinics

As soon as a woman announces her pregnancy she should be invited to contact the Community Midwife. From 8 – 12 weeks she will be seen at home by a Community Midwife. The Community Midwife will give her a Booklet on Arrangements for Antenatal Care, which will guide her through her antenatal care and the appointments, blood tests, scans etc. required. Afterwards, the patient will be seen either at the Surgery or the Hospital, depending on circumstances. Please contact the Surgery for your post-natal and 6 week baby checks, which can be booked in ordinary Surgery time. Please tell the receptionist that the appointment is for post-natal examination and baby check so extra time can be provided.
