Fitness to work note

Fitness to work note

  • Getting a fit note

Your doctor will only give you a fit note if your health affects your fitness for work. The fit note is your property and you should keep it – your employer can take a copy if they want one for their records.  Duplicate copies will incur a fee

You do not need a fit note if you are off sick for seven calendar days or less, you can self-certify for this time

  • Continuation of fit note

If you have already had a fit note from the Doctor and it has been agreed that you may require longer off work contact reception to request a continuation certificate, the receptionist will inform you if you need to be seen. Please allow 48 working hours for this to be completed.

Fit notes cannot be issued in advance of your previous one expiring.

  • Going back to work

You should go back to work as soon as you feel able to and with your employer’s agreement; this may be before your fit note runs out. You do not need to go back to see your doctor before going back to work.

Your doctor cannot give you a fit note stating that you are ‘fit for work’.
